AI technologies have increasingly been integrated into school classrooms in many parts of the world. Yet, little is known about how we might ensure not only effective but also ethical and sustainable use of AI technologies in the classroom environment. In particular, there is no consensus on what form of human-AI collaboration is optimal and sustainable when AI is used in the classroom environment – specifically, how much decision-making control should we give to students vs. teachers vs. AI systems?
We have been conducting design-based studies with school teachers and students in Germany and Japan to better and deeply understand how school students and teachers feel and perceive the use of AI technologies in the classroom context and how they view themselves in the complex environment where AI, students, and teachers would interact with each other. We have designed and used storyboards/scenarios to illustrate hypothetical AI use in the classroom context to elicit insights from teachers.
We are currently conducting a long-term co-design study with students and teachers to design new AI-based interactions that address and promote student agency in math learning. We plan to conduct a large-scale experiment in 2026-27.
