Learning to Adapt,
Learning with Agency

We are an interdisciplinary research group situated at the intersection of in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the Learning Sciences, and Cognitive Science/Psychology. Our mission is to advance the understanding of how people learn and to design/engineer advanced technologies that support the human learning process through deep partnerships with education stakeholders.

We focus on Learning to Adapt (defined broadly) by enhancing students’ adaptive expertise and self-regulated learning behaviors. By analyzing the computational traces of students’ decision making, for instance, we design environments that prepare learners for the complexities of learning in STEM/MINT domains.

Simultaneously, we focus on Learning with Agency by engineering technology that respects the autonomy of students and teachers. Using human-centered and participatory design reserch with education stakeholders, we aim to foster autonomous learners who can make informed, critical decisions in the age of AI.
