Hi! I’m Tomo and I’m the head of the LaLa Lab. I’m originally from Japan — during my first full-time job as an instructional designer at a university in Japan, I realized the importance of deeply understanding how people learn and designing technology to better support human learning. I lived and studied in the US for 6 years before coming to Germany in 2022. When not working, I’m mostly playing with my three little kids or exploring cafes with my wife 🙂Â
I also hold a part-time Faculty Assoicate postiion at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center. I received my Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University’s HCI Institute in the US in 2022, working with Prof. Dr. Vincent Aleven. Prior to attending CMU, I completed my Master’s degree in Learning, Design, and Technology at Stanford Graduate School of Education, working with Prof. Dr. Candace Thille.
